It was thrilling to learn that President Obama chose as his nominee to the United States Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor who if approved, would be the nation’s first Latina Supreme Court justice. Judge Sotomayor’s history, academic career, and legal experience make her one of the highest qualified nominees.
On the same day of the nomination I was deeply saddened to learn that the California Supreme Court upheld the ban on gay marriage. The one glimmer of hope in that decision was California Justice Carlos Moreno’s dissenting opinion.
Where equal protection is to protect the minority from the majority, I am confident that ultimately justice will win out for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters.
